Apple offers new augmented reality art sessions.

New [AR]T Walk Features Works by Leading Contemporary Artists, Curated in Partnership with the New Museum

Apple today opened registration for a series of new art-based Today at Apple augmented reality (AR) experiences, called [AR]T, offered at Apple Stores around the world. The three new sessions include an interactive walk featuring works by some of the world’s premier contemporary artists, an in-store session that teaches the basics of creating AR using Swift Playgrounds and an AR art installation viewable in every Apple Store worldwide.

To create the sessions Apple invited the New Museum, a leading destination for contemporary art in New York, to select seven artists — Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Carsten Höller and Pipilotti Rist — to participate in an experiential project that is free to the public.

“Today at Apple offers a window into the creative arts made possible by our products and customers,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail + People. “We hope attendees are inspired by the incredible AR creations in the [AR]T Walk and in-store installation, and we can’t wait to see what our visitors learn to create in the [AR]T Lab.”

Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis director for the New Museum commented, “The New Museum has always led at the intersection of art and tech and we could not have asked for a better partner in Apple to support the fantastic visions of these pioneering artists. Augmented reality is a medium ripe for dynamic and visual storytelling that can extend an artist’s practice beyond the studio or the gallery and into the urban fabric.”

Nick Cave Uses His Capital to Help Aspiring Creators

CHICAGO — Stretching across the windows of three conjoined storefronts on the Northwest Side of Chicago is a 70-foot-long mosaic made of 7,000 circular name tags with a mix of red and white backgrounds. They spell out the message “Love Thy Neighbor.” The simple declaration could be read as the mission statement underpinning the activity in the two-story brick building, a new multidisciplinary art space dreamed up by Nick Cave, the artist and educator, and his personal and professional partner, Bob Faust.

“It is our way of introducing ourselves to the community,” said Mr. Cave, best known for his dazzling “Soundsuits” that double as full-body sculptures and garments.

THESE BAGS WE CARRY ARE FILLED WITH PROMISE

Artists Nick Cave and Bob Faust create a kaleidoscopic mural from one of Cave’s iconic soundsuits constructed entirely of woven bags collected from around the world. These bags we carry are filled with promise is a through-the-looking glass interpretation that the baggage we all walk through life with is anything but weighty. In this manifestation, the bags seem to defy gravity, and rather than weighing us down, actually carry the hopes, dreams and aspirations that fuel us for our choices ahead. From the single source image of Cave’s work, Faust selects and manipulates key details that seem to morph seamlessly into multiple patterns, shape-shifting across the 31 liner feet of lobby wall.

By nearly all accounts, this American moment is one characterized by deep turmoil. Political chicanery. Gun violence. Racial discrimination. Gender-based violence. Police brutality. Education reform. On any given day, there is some permutation of those things permeating the news cycle.

Artists often become the standard-bearers leading the way toward a kind of soft reset—devising visual strategies and physical embodiments toward new methodologies for reckoning and—in the case of the latest project by Nick Cave (NA 2015), The Let Goat Park Avenue Armory in New York—release.

Nick Cave Lets Go in a Performance that Is Part Confession, Part Celebration, Hyperallergic

In “The Let Go” at the Park Avenue Armory, the artist explores jubilation washed with spectacle and an undertow of anguish.

Sometimes on a Sunday, in the morning hours when the grass is still wet, and the city street is mostly quiet, people rise and dress, and gather in a church to sing, to dance, and to clap their hands. Sometimes the hymns are sung low and throbbing like an earth tremor and sometimes they emerge strained and agonized, screeching and searching. Sometimes an organ marks the path to ecstasy, or a drum circle, or a fully electrified band, or just a group of singers coordinated in matching outfits and choreographed formation.

In 1995 the filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky was asked about the evolution of religion. He simply went on to say that someday churches will be replaced by great dance halls, places for parties. As I see it, the artist Nick Cave—who created the ultimate performance series The Let Go—has just fulfilled Jodorowsky’s prophecy.
